CIM Biscuit Plant Steel Corrosion Protection

Gunning & Son specified a Carboline steel corrosion-protection system for the CIM biscuit plant in Matola and supported the applicator to protect structural and process steelwork.

CIM Biscuit Plant Steel Corrosion Protection project
Project Overview

For the CIM biscuit manufacturing plant in Matola, Gunning & Son specified a Carboline corrosion-protection system, using Carbomastic 186 and Carbothane 134, and worked with the applicator to protect the plant’s steelwork. The coatings were selected to guard the steel against the moisture, heat and industrial atmosphere of a food-production facility.

The completed system gives the plant’s steelwork a protective barrier that slows corrosion and extends the serviceable life of the structure. A durable topcoat provides the outer defence, while the underlying coat improves adhesion and protection on the prepared steel.

Scope of Work

Gunning & Son’s role covered selecting the right coating system for the environment and supporting its application, with surface preparation and application carried out by the applicator. Getting the specification and preparation right is central, since the performance of any protective coating depends on the state of the steel beneath it.

  • Assessment of the steelwork and its exposure conditions

  • Recommendation and specification of Carbomastic 186 and Carbothane 134

  • Guidance on surface preparation and application to the applicator

  • Inspection support on coverage and finish before sign-off

Site Conditions & Challenges

Steel in a food-production plant is exposed to a mix of humidity, heat, wash-down and process by-products that together accelerate corrosion, particularly at joints, edges and connections. Specifying and coating steelwork inside a working facility brings access, containment and cleanliness constraints, with the work needing to be carried out without contaminating production areas. Achieving the right surface preparation on existing, in-situ steel is often the hardest part of the job and the biggest factor in how long the protection lasts.

Our Approach

Gunning & Son assessed the exposure conditions and recommended a two-coat system — Carbomastic 186 to protect and build adhesion, finished with a Carbothane 134 topcoat for durability and weathering resistance. Working alongside the applicator, the company provided product and technical guidance so surfaces were prepared correctly and the coatings applied as specified, coordinated with the plant to avoid disrupting production or contaminating food areas. Attention was given to edges, welds and connections, where corrosion typically starts.

Results Delivered

The CIM plant’s steelwork gained a protective coating system designed to resist the corrosive conditions of a food-production environment and to extend the structure’s working life. By addressing the vulnerable joints and edges as well as the main surfaces, the completed system reduces the risk of corrosion-related deterioration and the maintenance that comes with it.
